Designing Research Topic - Program Information

Final Output

Students will write an outline for an independent research topic and read 10-20 relevant scholarly publications. Students will take notes while reading publications. (The output will not be a complete research paper.)


Course Timeline

This is an outline for the students’ reference; specific adjustments are possible based on students’ performance.

Class 1 (1.5 hours Zoom meeting): Choose Topic

  • The mentor will explain prerequisites of the chosen discipline of interest.

  • The mentor will facilitate discussion on interests and ideas within the chosen discipline.

  • The mentor will guide students through exploring different sample topics.

  • By the end of the class, the student and the mentor should decide 1 specific, feasible, and time-bound research question.


Class 2 (1.5 hours Zoom meeting): Read Publications

  • The mentor will assist students in locating relevant research publications and sources to further explore the chosen topic.

  • The mentor will lead a discussion on exploratory research findings, ideas, and preferences.

  • The mentor will answer students’ questions relevant to the field.

  • By the end of the class, the student will compile a list of publications to read after class. The student should use simple language to summarize each publication.

  • The mentor will provide editing and feedback after-class.


Class 3 (1.5 hours Zoom meeting): Discuss Publications

  • The mentor will discuss with the student on how to integrate the ideas in the publications.

  • The student should ensure proper citations of each publication accessed.

  • The mentor will provide editing and feedback on the summary and citations.

  • The mentor will answer students’ questions relevant to the field.


Class 4 (1.5 hours Zoom meeting): Write Outline

  • The mentor will guide students in drafting the outline of the chosen topic for clarity.

  • The student will ensure the text is complete, coherent, and well-written.

  • The student will complete the final draft of the outline and citation pages.


In this process, students can contact the mentor through email if they have any questions. The mentor can provide written feedback to answer any questions or schedule shorter meetings to provide suggestions.


Certificate of Completion

Upon successful completion of this course, students will receive a Certificate of Completion. This certificate stands as a testament to the student's dedication, commitment, and accomplishments in research
