A.I. and Computer Science Program

Program Overview

Artificial Intelligence (AI) refers to the development of computer systems that can perform tasks that typically require human intelligence, such as recognizing speech, making decisions, and solving problems. AI technology involves machine learning algorithms, neural networks, natural language processing, and other advanced techniques that enable machines to learn from experience and improve their performance over time.

Data science is a field that combines statistics, computer science, and domain expertise to extract insights and knowledge from data. It involves collecting, processing, analyzing, and interpreting large and complex data sets to generate actionable insights and inform decision-making.

Computer, AI and Data Science majors have a diverse range of career opportunities available to them, including positions in software engineering, quantitative trading, consulting, and more.

A.I. and Computer Science Program

Previous Alumni of the AI, Computer and Data Science Program have secured positions and acceptances to the following firms/programs:

  • Investment Banking Summer Analyst – Morgan Stanley

  • Investment Banking Summer Analyst – Bank of America Merill Lynch

  • Strategy Consulting – Fervo Energy

  • INSIGHT Program – Jane Street

Eureka Alumni from this program have received admission offers to Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), University of Pennsylvania (UPenn), Duke University, Carnegie Mellon University, and other top US universities. Alumni from this program have gone off to pursue studies in  Computer Science, Data Science, Finance, and other majors.

Many students that have participated in this program also participated in famous competitions and received multiple awards, such as National Semifinalist at the Technovation Challenge, USA Computing Olympiad (USACO) Gold Division, National AP Scholar, American Invitational Mathematics Examination (AIME) Qualifier, and MIT Math Prize for Girls Qualifier.

In addition, we are proud to see students in this program actively participating in the community,  volunteering where possible.  Several of our students have founded non-profit organizations to help their local community. 1 student was the Head of the SAP Autism Volunteer Team. Another student volunteered her spare time at the Girls in Computing Club.

The below sections will provide more insight into the students that have attended this program and share their experiences and successes.

Research Topic Samples

New Lip-Reading Method: MobileNet and LSTM Transfer Learning

Children with cleft palate often have speech disorders and struggle to find professional speech therapists in some regions. While surgeries can help, changing speech patterns is difficult. A neural network project aims to shorten speech therapy training by using technology to determine if a patient's mouth pose matches the correct pronunciation, providing immediate feedback to the patient. The project uses convolutional and recurrent neural networks to process video clips of patients speaking and determine if they are performing the correct mouth poses. The Eureka alumni who authored this thesis was also the winner of the International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF).

Community Activities

Johns Hopkins Center Talented Youth Summer Program

The Center for Talented Youth, a nonprofit academic center of Johns Hopkins University, delivers academic excellence and transformational experiences to advanced learners in grades 2-12. A Eureka alumni was selected for this program.

China Thinks Big

China Thinks Big is China’s premier high school research and innovation competition, giving talented high school students around the country the opportunity to demonstrate their intellectual creativity through tackling important issues posed by professors at Harvard and other top institutions. CTB spans six months and culminates in the National Finals held in Shanghai. A Eureka alumni from the Data Science program participated in this competition and subsequently became a Global Qualifier, a recognition only accorded to the top 1-3% of participants.

Brown Leadership Institute

The Brown Leadership Institute's mission is to help students develop and apply the knowledge, skills and attitudes associated with effective and socially responsible leadership. Courses utilize an interdisciplinary approach to explore complex, contemporary social issues of pressing global interest. A Eureka alumni from the Data Science program was selected for the Women and Leadership course.
